Psychosis Observed During the Course of Post-infectious Encephalomyelitis

Abstract
One case is presented where characteristic psychiatric symptoms were observed during the course of post-infectious encephalomyelitis.
Psychotic symptoms included various delusions and hallucinations, which became most severe immediately after awakening from sleep, then showing gradual remission, followed by nearly normal state shortly before falling asleep. Such a cycle was continuously repeated for about three weeks.
More elevated protein and less mononuclear pleocytosis in CSF were found at the peak of psychotic symptoms, in contrast to the non-psychotic period.
It is emphasized that psychiatrists active intervention as well as their close relationship with those of other departments involved is important in the effective management of such organic mental disorder.
